St. Pat's is a big deal in Rolla. You probably already know that, unless you haven't left your dorm room since October. This year brings about the 96th time that the celebration will rock this town for over a week. The members of the St. Pat's Committee work hard to put on this celebration each year (they are the people that wear the green jackets adorned with a shamrock). St. Patrick and his court are members of the St. Pat's committee who have put in 3 years of dedicated service to the organization. Everyone is invited to come out and participate in the festivities. Hundreds of UMR alumni will undoubtedly be in town, and Governor Holden has announced the "honoring of St. Patrick, Patron of Engineers, and urge all Missourians to participate in the forthcoming festivities in the City of Rolla, Missouri."
The events of St. Pat's will consist of various competitions between organizations, as well as social events (PC way to say get drunk and have a good time). Get ready for the happiest time of year to be in Rolla!!!
Snake Invasion (March 1-3, all day on campus) Snake Invasion is the kick off event to the St. Pat's Celebration and gets the entire UMR campus fired up for the upcoming festivities. For the three days of the invasion, the freshman carry shillelaghs around campus. A shillelagh is a small tree trunk with the roots still attached. They are usually decorated by paint or carvings to shown the St. Pat's spirit of its owner. The freshmen use their shillelaghs to smash hordes of (rubber) snakes into the ground; saving UMR from the fearsome invasion. This event not only celebrates the tales of St. Patrick chasing the snakes out of Ireland, but is a great time for everyone involved....except the snakes.
Follies (March 8 & 9 at the Puck at noon, March 10 at the Bandshell at noon) Follies is the first major event of the St. Pat's Celebration. The Follies' events run over three days and are meant to build up St. Pat's spirit while giving the entire student body plenty of fun and laughs. Students participate in events such as "Greenest Person," "Sumo Suits," "St. Pat's Jingle," and several others for both fun and St. Pat's points. The first two days of Follies are held on Monday and Tuesday at the puck on campus. The third day of Follies, on Wednesday, moves out to the Bandshell in downtown Rolla. On the third day there is the official "Arrival of the St. Pat's Court." There is a small ceremony with guest speakers, followed by the final Follies' events.
